FAIRE LE MUR
Site-specific installation, Bergerac, 2018
»Faire le mur« is a French expression meaning to leave a place without permission, sneak out, or slip away unnoticed. Literally, the phrase also evokes a wall—and thus a boundary that must be overcome. The installation Faire le mur, realised on Rue des Fontaines in Bergerac, translates this double meaning into an intervention in public space.
For three weeks, a large black fabric screen stretched across the entire width of the street, reaching up to the eaves of the adjacent buildings. A single opening allowed passers-by to cross the barrier and reach the other side. The structure thus became both a passageway and a stage: depending on the viewing angle, individuals or groups appeared through the gap or vanished behind it, their everyday movements through the city suddenly rendered visible, almost choreographed.
Beyond altering perceptions of the site itself, the installation marked the transition between the town centre and a socially disadvantaged neighbourhood on its outskirts—making tangible a social divide that otherwise remains nearly invisible within the urban landscape.
