Proposal for the Freedom and Unity Monument in Leipzig, 2024
Situation Room

The proposal for the Leipzig Freedom and Unity Monument envisions a vibrant space for reflection on freedom and democracy, commemorating the Peaceful Revolution of 1989/90. The monument consists of numerous coloured glass stelae symbolising the diversity of people who stood up for freedom then and continue to do so today. At its centre, a public square traces the outline of Leipzig’s inner-city ring road, along which the Monday demonstrations took place in 1989.

At the monument's centre, an LED display continuously recombines the word »freedom« with shifting adjectives and verbs. This highlights the dynamic nature of freedom and the need for its meaning to be continually renegotiated. The monument connects past and present, inviting visitors to linger, engage in discussion, and actively reflect on the values of freedom and democracy.
