24-channel sound installation, 2013
The sound installation 53 Comments draws on 53 readers' comments by 33 individuals, published in the online edition of the Leipziger Volkszeitung in 2012 in response to an article about the re-enactment of the Battle of Leipzig on its 199th anniversary.
In these comments, 33 individuals engage in a controversial debate about re-enactments, touching on historical and contemporary politics, the representation and fictionalisation of history, and broader sociopolitical issues. The comments develop into a polyphonic debate about the possibilities and limitations of representing history through re-enactments.
The comments were recorded by 33 speakers and arranged so that quiet passages alternate with moments of verbal battle. The arrangement of picnic blankets echoes the spatial organisation of a field hospital, combining associations of leisure and recreation with images of war and injury.
The work was presented in 2013, at the same time and place as the re-enactment marking the battle's 200th anniversary, offering a critical counterpoint to the historical re-enactment.
