The artistic research project and exhibition Großer Gott wir loben Dich – Eine Relektüre presents Sven Bergelt’s critical examination of the antisemitic »Institute for the Study and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life«, which operated in Eisenach from 1939 to 1945. At the centre of the project is the hymnal »Großer Gott wir loben Dich«, published by the institute.

Through typographic analysis, the installation makes visible the alterations made to the hymnal, revealing the institute’s methods and ideological interventions. Bergelt's work thus reveals how liturgical language itself was reshaped as an instrument of antisemitic ideology.

The installation also presents excerpts from documents held in the archive of the Evangelical Church in Thuringia (Landeskirchenarchiv Eisenach), offering insights into the institute’s political dimensions. They document attempts by those involved to retrospectively justify their actions during the Nazi era. At the same time, they reveal the internal church debate of the 1990s, when the church struggled to acknowledge its guilt and its share of responsibility during National Socialism."
