CAST

Photographs, 2007

The photographic series Cast examines the staging of emotions in reality TV talent shows. In these programmes, personal stories, hopes for fame and recognition, and moments of heightened emotion are publicly staged. The series brings together portraits of crying individuals photographed directly from the television screen. Removed from their original media context, the portrayed individuals lose their narrative framing. Through their serial arrangement, the images question the staging of emotions and television’s promise of authenticity.
