you are (not) the only one
2 flags 400 x 150 cm, neon tube 160 x 50 cm, 2017
In the Catholic church of St. Sebastian Bonn, you will find a neon sign with the sentence "you are (not) the only one" on a vault pillar in front of the altar. The word "not" turns on and off alternately, so that the sentence "you are not the only one" and "you are the only one" is readable. In the outdoor room of the church a red and a blue flag waving the letters "doubt"
Located in the sacred space between the altar, the crucifix, the baptismal font and the sitting congregation, the lettering implies the question of whether there is only one true God. To confess to faith does not mean to be without doubt, but implies a critical thinking about religion. On the other hand, the installation asks tolerance for other religions, but also tolerance, solidarity and a sustainable life in general. "You are the only one" is also a much used line in pop songs. The romantic affection of a love and the Christian promises of faith "... till death do us apart ..." is today hardly a permanent existence. In Roman Catholic understanding, divorce is possible only under very limited circumstances. In contrast, there is a social reality in which divorce, serial relationships and a commercialization of love take place.
